BELLTOWN
Belltown is a keystone neighborhood connected to four areas – Uptown (also known as Lower Queen Anne), South Lake Union, Denny Triangle, downtown Seattle – and the city’s waterfront at Elliott Bay. It is home to several condo buildings, as well as hundreds of food & drink establishments, clubs, parks and bike paths.
The area has a high walk score, with popular public transportation, ride-share and bike-share options available throughout. There’s also a daily ferry service on the Belltown waterfront to Victoria, B.C.
Belltown is home to schools of higher learning. They include Antioch University Seattle, City University of Seattle and The Seattle School of Theology & Psychology. The neighborhood is also the Pacific Northwest regional home for Whole Foods Market.
The area is named for William Bell, one of the original white settlers of what became Seattle. He lived here for about 22 years until his death in 1870. A street in Belltown is also named after him.
The city’s population growth continues, while not at the same pace as a few years ago. The U.S. Census estimates the city’s population at about 740,000, with a majority (26%) aged 25-34. The median income inside the city’s limits hovers around $111,000.
Belltown is densely populated with several mid- and high-rise residential buildings, including:
- Arbor Place Tower, a 26-story high-rise with spa, sauna and indoor pool, at 121 Vine Street
- Bay Vista Building, 24-story luxury community and home to the highest-priced Seattle condo sale on record ($12 million in 2019), at 2821 2nd Avenue
- Continental Place, a 33-story high-rise, believed to be the first purpose-built condo in Seattle (1981), at 2125 1st Avenue
